Tonight were presenting a program on the craft and varied history of documentary filmmaking. In the spring we hope to present a program on the creation of music scores for film by taking a close look at the storied career of max steiner, perhaps hollywoods most influential composer. It has been noted that we are presently in a golden age of documentary filmmaking with more documentaries being filmed, screened, and seen, than ever before. But what impresses me more than that, i suppose, is that ive noticed very often these days in advocacy and in educational groups, a particular recent documentary comes up in the group conversation. People reference it, recommend it, and in particular talk about its defining impact on them. Documentaries are becoming more pervasive and an integral part of our conversations about political and social issues. In fact, theyre often framing and shaping those conversations. Why this is happening is perhaps something our guests here tonight will talk about. J

Narrator tortoises were listed as a threatened species in april of 1990, and ravens are adding to this already complicated situation. Food and water provided by humans have boosted raven populations, dramatically increasing attacks on tortoises. Fourth man you know, its at the point where its a tradeoff is it the raven or is it the tortoise . Narrator in aesops tale, the tortoise won by being slow and steady, but in todays race, after surviving millions of years, the tortoise is in peril. This young tortoise lives in the mohave desert in southern california. It will take 4 years for it to grow just to thisis size. It will be another 15 years or more before it is fully an adult, able to reproduce. It has about a 2 chance of making it. The environment it lives in is challenging, and there are numerous threats, both natural and manmade. Today many tortoises live in preserves. This one in the western mohave has been studied for decades. It once supported 350 tortoises per square mile. Kris

He was working the tracing different files and found an early history of the crv. This led, as all good stories, to further research, further inquiry. He has written a book called band of crusaders. His book covers 50 years of humanitarian relief and explains what i call this creation story of the crv in the context of many competing agencies, difficulties of feeding people during world war i. It makes clear the special role, the pivotal role played by the crv and shaping later humanitarian efforts. I added, thanks to brandon, a new phrase what i do my tours and i speak of this band of crusaders. To the president s side. This is at the petersons house directly across the street from fords theater. Barnes calls for something called a probe and when he founted that in the back here on display. The idea with the probe was that it would be threaded into the wound with the idea that depending on how far into the wound the probe would go might identify where the fragment or bullet was. They werent able to do so. The bullet they found later ended up being lodged behind lincolns right eye. But the probe was retained and eventually made its way into the museums holdings and is part of the exhibit we have here on display. Surgeon general barnes and Army Medical Museum staff John Woodward and another surgeon named Edward Curtis were at the president s bedside in the hours before he died, which was about 7 22 the next morning, the 15th of april, 1865. It was decided then that a postmortem would be performed very quickly and the president s body was removed to the white house and the autops
