These were the men and officers personally assigned to general washington and had the responsibility of ensuring his safety. So its a wonderful object directly from the washington family that, again, reflects his command, his leadership of the Continental Army during revolution. The Surgeon General, Surgeon General joseph barnes, responds to the president s side. This is at the petersons house directly across the street from fords theater. Barnes calls for something called a probe and when he founted that in the back here on display. The idea with the probe was that it would be threaded into the wound with the idea that depending on how far into the wound the probe would go might identify where the fragment or bullet was. They werent able to do so. The bullet they found later ended up being lodged behind lincolns right eye. But the probe was retained and eventually made its way into the museums holdings and is part of the exhibit we have here on display. They have just participated in one of the most dramatic victories in modern history and are now part of really the richest most extensive empire since the classical age. And the first object i want to show you is an engraved soldier powder. This is a cow horn that was carved in 1763 to reflect that great victory. So you can see a crown and gr or the latin georges rex, king george iii. So this is that new british monarch. Its actually engraved with a scene of the city of havana in cuba which is some of the fortifications around havana. British ships in the harbor.
