Community members and family of Mi kmaq activist Nora Bernard came together to mark the renaming of a Halifax street that had long honoured a man who had called for the killing of her ancestors.
After a ceremony Monday in Halifax's north end, the street formerly known as Cornwallis Street is now officially Nora Bernard Street. The renaming honours the Mi'kmaw activist who was a driving force behind a class-action lawsuit against Canada on behalf of residential school survivors that was settled for upwards of $5 billion in 2005.
Mi'kmaw drumming and dancing marked the official dedication and renaming ceremony held Friday in Dartmouth for the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Kopit Hopson 1752.
