Miguel Cardona remembers how overwhelmed he felt when he walked into school for the first time as a student.
The son of parents who moved to Meriden, Conn., from Puerto Rico as children, he lived in public housing and didn’t speak English as a young child.
“I remember my first day of kindergarten at John Barry School,” the nominee for U.S. secretary of education said at a virtual farewell celebration with Meriden leaders earlier this month, referring to an elementary school in his home city.
“That day, I ended up in the nurse’s office crying, and I had to go home early. I never wanted to go back. Here I am, 40 years later, and I’m having mixed emotions about leaving the place I love.”

HARTFORD, Conn The Board of Education Union is calling on Governor Ned Lamont for a clearer policy on schooling during COVID-19.
In a letter sent yesterday, the coalition outlined the need for the policy regarding how school districts should handle quarantines and having to take time off in public schools.
Coalition leaders said that too many school districts are not following procedures established by health experts for responding to COVID-19 exposures and are disregarding State Department of Education Commissioner Miguel Cardona s recommendations.

CONNECTICUT A coalition representing more than 60,000 public school employees has formally asked Gov. Ned Lamont to create a uniform coronavirus quarantine and leave policy for school districts.
In a letter sent to the governor dated Tuesday, the Connecticut Board of Education Union Coalition specifically requested that districts must accommodate any educator and school staff willing and able to work remotely due to a health condition, while under quarantine, or when needing to care for a child at home, and if a district does not provide such remote work opportunity, must continue to pay its educator or staff.
