Two Connecticut Students Named 2021 U S Presidential Scholars

Ned Lamont Governor Ned Lamont and Connecticut Acting Commissioner of Education Charlene Russell-Tucker are congratulating two Connecticut residents who were named today as 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars for their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields. The recognition is one of the nation’s highest honors for graduating high school seniors. The recipients include: Colin B. Speaker, Greenwich High School, Greenwich The U.S. Department of Education selected the program’s 57 th class of 161 high school seniors from a national pool of student semifinalists, who were nominated for their high academic performance and distinguishing themselves by overcoming hardships, achieving a unique accomplishment, or demonstrating outstanding leadership.

Governor Lamont Announces $11 Million To Expand High-Quality Summer Enrichment Programs for Connecticut Children

Governor Ned Lamont yesterday announced that he is proposing to dedicate up to $11 million in federal funding Connecticut has received for COVID-19 recovery efforts toward the expansion of programs that connect students to high-quality summer enrichment and recreational opportunities, with an emphasis on communities and children who were most impacted by the pandemic. “After a challenging school year for so many students, our goal with this funding is for all kids to be able to access the terrific summer camps, child care centers, and other summer programs that our state has to offer,”  Governor Lamont said. “By expanding access and lowering barriers that have precluded students from prior participation, we can help ensure that students have a fun and educational summer with their peers and are set up for success in the fall. New $10.7M state program addresses student absenteeism, disengagement FacebookTwitterEmail A new statewide initiative has been created to address high rates of student absenteeism and disengagement. Gov. Ned Lamont announced the new program Monday to support K-12 students with poor attendance and engagement levels during the COVID-19 pandemic. Called the Learner Engagement and Attendance Program, it is a partnership between the state education department and six Regional Education Service Centers and targets Bridgeport and 14 other school districts throughout Connecticut. The program is funded by $10.7 million of the state’s federal COVID-19 relief dollars, and comes as rates of chronic absenteeism remain stubbornly high in some areas of the state.
