Fayetteville State s pick, Allison, deserves a chance

I changed my mind at least twice. I have always tried to be honest in whatever I write, and let the chips fall where they may.  Like many, I am not thrilled about the process in how Allison came to be chancellor. He resigned from the UNC Board of Governors in the fall, with three years remaining, and the same body chose him to lead FSU. The proceedings of a university search committee have been kept secret, but more than 60 other applicants applied for the job. One cannot help but wonder if any of them ever really had a chance.

ROAR! Dinosaurs stomp into the NC State Fairgrounds

RALEIGH The dinosaurs have come to the NC State Fairgrounds.  Dino Safari, which opened Thursday, allows guests in their cars to drive past 40 life-sized moving dinos ranging from wee ones not much bigger than a large house pet to the mighty T-Rex, king of the dinosaurs. The event runs through March 7. Tickets are $49.95 for regular-sized cars and $59.95 for vehicles that hold eight or more. Tickets are available at dinosafari.com. We went with our two children, Sam, who is 8, and Helen Ann, who will be 6 next month. We watched a video beforehand, where Professor Noteworthy explained we would be driving through Pangea, the large land mass that existed millions of years ago, and which scientists believe drifted into the continents we all know and love today.

10 facts about Charles Chesnutt, Fayetteville s famous Black writer

Charles Chesnutt (1858-1932) has permanently written Fayetteville into literary history. He is considered the first Black novelist to gain nationwide acclaim. His best-known writings were post-Civil War and Reconstruction stories of the color line, some of them set in the fictional town of “Patesville” a thinly disguised Fayetteville.  Chesnutt was born in Cleveland to free Black parents from Fayetteville. When he was 9, the family moved back to Fayetteville after the Civil War. Later, as a married man in his twenties, he returned to Cleveland, finding better opportunities up north to support his family. There, he would pass the bar and start a successful legal court reporting business.

Cumberland schools crowns first-ever winner of virtual spelling bee

Cumberland schools crowns first-ever winner of virtual spelling bee But to compete in the official bee, he had to wait two years. When Zachary’s shot came, he did not miss. On Friday, the VanStory Hills Elementary School student beat three of the county’s other top spellers to punch his ticket to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, usually held in Washington, D.C. The championship word was “girder,” an iron or steel beam. Zachary is the son of Jeffrey and Rachel Thurnher and older brother of Ryan Thurnher, 6. His fourth-grade teacher at VanStory is Avery Cameron. “This is something he’s wanted for a long time,” Zachary’s mother said. “We’ve tried to encourage him just to have fun. But he’s worked so hard and we’re so proud of him.”

Myron B Pitts: Rosie & Ruthie — A love story

Myron B. Pitts: Rosie & Ruthie A love story Someone had deposited the two sister kitties at the county shelter. FAPS acquired them from there.  We saw them at a FAPS event at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden in November. We played with them in a room of the Orangery at the garden. Samuel, who is now 8, and Helen Ann, 5, both took a liking to them. So did Sarah and I.  But we only wanted one kitten. That’s what we told ourselves. A few days later, we went to FAPS off Bragg Boulevard to see what other kittens they had. But we wound up mainly playing with Google and Chrome again.
