The new edition, which will be delivered by mail, will be edited by veteran newsman and longtime city resident Matt Curatolo with the help of The Journalâs perpetual sports editor Dave âDocâ Shea.
Itâs not entirely correct to say that Mr. Shea is returning. Heâs never left.
Mr. Shea has been a figure on the sidelines of sporting competitions in St. Lawrence County ever since legendary Journal Publisher and Editor Charles âChuckâ Kelly hired him in 1973.
Mr. Shea retired in 2018, but it didnât stick. Nine months later, he was back on the sidelines putting truth to the saying, âIf you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.â

It’s Boxing Day, 2006, in Lamu and we are on a moonlit lit rooftop of a multi-storey house rented by an Egyptian lad called Djibril with writers on the 2006 Kwani – SLS (Summer Literary Seminars) Lamu workshop.
Kwani? founder Binyavanga Wainaina is drinking beer. I’m on vodka. Writer Martin Kimani is sipping Campari, as Kwani? Editor Charles ‘Potash’ Mathathia is smoking, and because the electricity in Lamu is off for (reliable old KPLC), we all have our torches on, a surreal aesthetic.
We thought this Kwani fest would be the start of an annual pilgrimage to the seaside, Christmas cancelled for literary workshops.
