9 MVC agencies closed to COVID statewide despite 3 reopening

The state Motor Vehicle Commission started Tuesday on a high note, when three agencies reopened, but those gains were cut by one when the North Bergen agency closed after an employee there tested positive for the coronavirus.
North Bergen Licensing Center closed just after noon when an employee who was last in the agency on Jan. 9 tested positive for COVID-19, said William Connolly, an MVC spokesman. North Bergen is scheduled to reopen on Jan. 25, he said.
That happened after the MVC had 11 closed agencies on Monday out of 39 in the state. On Tuesday morning, the Manahawkin Vehicle Center, Toms River Licensing Center, and Edison Licensing Center reopened as scheduled.
More than half a dozen New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission agency locations are closed through at least the beginning of next week due to positive coronavirus tests.
These closures represent just a fraction of the agency s shutdowns of individual locations over the past several months, as it attempts to continue serving the public during a global pandemic.
When a full-time employee who s been at the office tests positive for the virus, the agency shuts it down typically for two weeks since the employee s last day on the job.
So since reopening to the public in early July, the MVC has had to stop operations at agencies about 60 times times due to COVID-19, according to data provided to New Jersey 101.5.

The Motor Vehicle Commission in Rahway is the most recent center to close after an employee tested positive for COVID-19 which means that a total of 8 MVC agencies are currently closed in the Garden State.

As another MVC agency closes due to COVID-19, Murphy weighs options to help drivers

The number of state Motor Vehicle Commission agencies closed due to the coronavirus crept up Thursday to eight after two agencies closed and another reopened, officials said.
And that’s putting drivers in a different kind of line as they try and reschedule canceled appointments at those agencies before their documents expire. Gov.Phil Murphy said he is aware of the issue when asked on Tuesday.
The Springfield agency was closed Wednesday afternoon, followed by the Rio Grande agency on Thursday after an employee tested positive for the coronavirus. Springfield is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, Jan.19 and Rio Grande on Friday, because an employee who initially tested positive, later tested negative, officials said.
