From pizza to soul food to vegan fare, March Madness teams have been ordering a lot of food from local eateries during the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and that’s welcome news for restaurants that have struggled through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s been awesome. It’s been great,” HotBox Pizza founder Gabe Connell said of the team meal business his company has received over the past two weeks of competition. “The best part about it is, these are big guys and they eat a lot.”

It’s no surprise that Indiana, like the rest of America, is having a bumpy year in hospitality. A handful of the industry’s heavy hitters are gathering on one stage to discuss where we all go from here for a summit they’re calling
On the Table. Hosted by the HI-FI, an organization leading the #SaveOurStages charge locally, this event will happen in-person on a distanced stage Jan. 22 from 3 to 4 p.m. Masks are required for the entire event, which will also be streaming via West Fork Whiskey’s Facebook page. How do nachos, the world’s most perfect mountain of food, get even better? Make them dessert and add ice cream. Carl Gordon of
Gordon’s Milkshake Bar (865 Massachusetts Ave., 317-453-1360) toasts tortilla strips and coats them in cinnamon and sugar before adding seasonal flavors and fresh ice cream (made by the Gordon’s team in a facility not far from the milkshake shop). Stewed sweet potatoes and marshmallows topped with cheesecake ice cream have a fall feel; fresh strawberries with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream recall a summer vibe. Get creative with your own favorite flavors, and remember: Ain’t no mountain high enough.
