ECHO TRAIL Clearing of trees and brush along this iconic roadway within the Superior National Forest is on a temporary hold while St. Louis County officials take stock of work done to date. Some border country residents have raised alarm over the impact to the scenic qualities of the road, which is a primary access route to a large swath of the western end of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
“We have no issue with brush clearing,” said Paul Schurke, of Ely, who along with a handful of others, met with Forest Service officials and St. Louis County Commissioner Paul McDonald last week to discuss their concerns. But, he said, the removal of hundreds of large pine and the prospect of additional pine removal, is concerning.

ELY, MN (KDAL) - First responders in northern Minnesota are getting a boost in wireless communications thanks to the FirstNet expansion in the region .
ELY - A fire in the Boundary Waters Area Canoe Wilderness, which initially sent smoke plumes into the skies, calmed to a smoldering blaze drifting with the wind on an overcast Thursday.
âThe intensity of the fire has been knocked down,â Superior National Forest spokesperson Tim Engrav told the Mesabi Tribune in a phone interview. âItâs not growing.â
The blaze, named the Bezhik Fire, started on Monday. It burned beneath red and white pines across 10 acres in the La Croix District of the BWCAW, about 15 mile northwest of Ely. The fire spread to 950 acres and was at 10 percent containment on Thursday afternoon, Superior National Forest officials said.
