The Jan. 6 horrific attack on the United States Capitol was an act of sedition. The orderly transition of constitutional power is a sacred rite of American democracy, faithfully practiced for over 200 years in tranquil times and in times of war and of civil strife. The ability of Congress, our most representative branch of government, to conduct business in a safe environment is fundamental to the legitimacy of our democracy. Our political leaders have a sworn duty to uphold the Constitution and faithfully execute its laws. All three of these cornerstones of our democracy were breached.
Those who perpetrated those treasonous acts must be held accountable, and those who encouraged them should face even greater retributions, for they took a solemn oath to protect and defend our Constitution.
