Colombo (News 1st): Religious leaders, trade unions, civil and political organizations are continuing their demands against the sale of the East Container Terminal of the Colombo Port.
They point out that this terminal which is 18m deep can be used to dock some of the biggest ships in the world.
85% of the Colombo South Terminal is owned by a Chinese owned company while the majority stake of the SAGT located adjacent to the ECT is owned by private companies.

The National Movement to protect the East Container Terminal of the Colombo Port stressed that if the current administration of the ECT to run a profitable venture effectively, the management should be replaced by individuals better suited to hold those positions.
Trade Unions presented their proposals to the committee appointed by the Cabinet to reviews proposals regarding the East Container Terminal.
The proposals were handed over to the Secretary of the Ministry U.D.C. Jayalal.
He is the chairman of the committee appointed by the cabinet to review the proposals.

COLOMBO (News1st): Former president Maithripala Sirisena has said that he had opposed moves to handover the Colombo Port’s East Container Terminal to foreign entities even during his presidency.
The former president said Friday that India and Japan had come forward for a joint project to develop the terminal.
“Since both countries possessed the required wealth, I proposed that they develop the Western Terminal instead,” Sirisena noted.
He recalled that, in the presence of 3000 port workers, he had pledged that the East Container terminal will not be given to any foreign nation.
