May 2021 sees fewest local COVID-19 cases, deaths since pandemic started in Alachua County

Recent trends show that COVID-19 infections and deaths decreased significantly during the month of May.  Fewer than 1,000 new cases were reported last month, compared with more than 1,200 recorded in April by the state health department. Virus-related deaths also fell by half, from 16 local deaths reported in April to only eight in May.   Nearly half of county residents fully vaccinated  So far, 113,045 local residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and another 17,745 have received their first dose meaning 42.8% of the county has been fully vaccinated, and 49.6% have received at least one dose.  In the state, 40.6% of residents are fully vaccinated, and 50.3% of the population has received at least one vaccine dose.

In the week prior, the county administered 4,268 vaccines, for an average of 711 doses per day. There is a lag between when vaccinations take place and when they’re uploaded to the state’s database.  So far, 101,278 local residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and another 22,828 have received their first dose  meaning 37.6% of the county has been fully vaccinated, using the U.S. Census Bureau s 2019 population estimate.
