State health department data from the week of June 18 to June 24 show that more than five dozen new cases have been reported locally, including one case of the rapidly spreading Delta variant that’s raising concerns among scientists.   Nearly 300 local residents have died from virus  Alachua County added 67 new cases in the past week with a 2.1% case positivity rate. A total of 25,425 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the county.

Alachua County COVID-19 update: Two hospitalized with variant Emily Mavrakis, The Gainesville Sun © Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay Coronavirus cells/Image by Gerd Altmann, Pixabay Two Alachua County residents who were infected with the B.1.1.7 United Kingdom strain of COVID-19 have been hospitalized, according to state health department data.  The residents include a 55-year-old man and 36-year-old woman, and additional information on their conditions was not available Thursday afternoon. The number of local COVID-19 variant cases has increased in recent weeks, from 90 on May 5 to 111 on Thursday.   Surrounding counties also have identified cases of the same variants found in Alachua County, including: Marion (120), Clay (67), Putnam (20), Levy (20), Columbia (11), Suwannee (9), Bradford (4), Dixie (4), Union (3) and Gilchrist (2). Lafayette County has not yet identified any variant cases.
