Thoughts of sledding invoke images of snowy hills and cold extremities, but the earliest record of sledding is actually from Ancient Egypt. Even though the Egyptians did it first, sleds or sledges remained popular devices used to carry goods or people across distances throughout history.
Back in 2000 BCE Egyptians moved large, heavy objects through sand with sleds to help them build the Great Pyramids. The device was also used by the Vikings; while most notorious for their ships, archaeologists discovered a burial ship from 834 AD with 3 wood-carved sleds inside. By this point in time, sleds were so common that these particular ones were more for decoration than use.
