Community responds to law enforcement s efforts to strengthen relationship

The Opelika and Auburn Police Departments have worked to build on their relationship with the Auburn-Opelika community since the killing of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in 2020.

Opelika Police Chief Shane Healey and Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said their departments haven’t made any major changes within the past three years, but have continued growing their programs, growing relationships in the community and improving the training for their officers.

Des Moines County Conservation Eagle Watch

Burlington, IA- Des Moines County Conservation is reminding residents the annual Eagle Watch Program will be taking place Saturday, January 21st. The program will start at the Port of Burlington at 10:00 am, with an eagle presentation. After the presentation, the program will move to Lock and Dam 18, for a chance to observe eagles. Program participants will drive their own vehicles to Lock and Dam 18. Participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars, but there will also be some binoculars available to borrow.
