Former Cape Cod principal Patrick Clark recovers from a heart attack

Cape Cod Times OSTERVILLE The sun is peeking out around noon Wednesday when a woman walking with a little girl at Dowses Beach spots former Barnstable High School principal Patrick Clark and waves. Clark said he gets that a lot people stopping him at the grocery store, wanting to know how he is doing. Many Cape residents are familiar with the story of how he collapsed Sept. 27 on a morning bike ride right here at Dowses Beach, two days after being placed on paid administrative leave by Barnstable Schools Superintendent Meg Mayo-Brown during a tumultuous reopening of school in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Newfound Cleanliness by Nikki Moeini, Woodford County High School

Eagle Pond, Epping Forest An obvious effect of the national lockdown is a shortage of people wandering the streets. When going to parks, high streets and any other public place, the difference in the number of people compared to the pre-Covid era is apparent. The effects of this change on the environment can also be seen - for example, in the newfound cleanliness of bodies of water. A case of this can be found in Eagle Pond, a pond in Epping Forest. If you visit today, you will no longer find the half-eaten bread crusts and masses of pond algae of the time before the lockdown. Instead, the water is crystal clear, and masses of seagulls, Canadian geese and various other kinds of duck flood the waters. To see the wildlife flourishing is quite satisying, and it is recommended that you pay a visit yourself.

Nursing home employees are skeptical of the long-term effects of the coronavirus vaccine

Being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is a way to protect her health, said Lopes, a Harwich resident. “I got it because I have a lot of underlying conditions and work in a nursing home. I don’t want to get sick.”  Lopes, who works at South Dennis Healthcare, formerly known as Eagle Pond, knows that not all employees feel the same as she does about the vaccine. “They’re afraid because they’re feeling like it might have long-term effects,” she said. Although nursing home employees were in the first phase of COVID-19 vaccination for most states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently estimated that just about 40% of nursing home employees opted to get the vaccine.
