(WDIV) On Friday, the Wisconsin Air National Guard’s 115th Fighter Wing identified the deceased fighter pilot as Captain Durwood “Hawk” Jones, a 37-year-old decorated combat veteran from Albuquerque, New Mexico. At about 8 p.m. on Dec. 8, Jones’ F-16 Fighting Falcon crashed in the Hiawatha National Forest during a training mission. Authorities say Jones was the only person aboard the aircraft.

  Today the 115th Fighter Wing identified Capt. Durwood “Hawk” Jones, 37, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, as the pilot who lost his life in an F-16 crash in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Dec. 8.Capt. Jones joined the Air National Guard in 2011 and graduated from F-16 basic qualification training in 2015. He is a decorated combat veteran, deploying as a part of a United States Pacific Command Theater Support Package to Japan in 2015 and to Korea in 2017. He deployed again in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel to Afghanistan in 2019. Capt. Jones has been awarded two Air Medal’s with combat “C” devices, which are awarded to individuals who have been personally exposed to hostile action or under significant risk of hostile action.

Associated Press New Mexico health officials say another 43 people have died due to COVID-19 complications. The number released Friday is among the highest daily death tolls for the state in recent weeks. Nearly two-thirds of the latest fatalities involved people in the 70s or older, while one of the deaths was a McKinley County man in his 20s who had underlying conditions. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said her prayers are with those who have lost loved ones and she urged people to abide by the state s public health restrictions. Officials also reported an additional 1,849 confirmed cases, bringing the statewide total since the pandemic began to 116,565.

The Madison-based Fighter Wing revealed Jones’ identity Friday, a day after searchers found the Fighting Falcon and his body in Michigan’s Hiawatha National Forest. The search effort included not only Fighter Wing members but also local emergency responders, the U.S. Coast Guard and other government agencies.
