Rochester police shot and killed a man Friday night when he opened fire as they tried to arrest him. Chief Cynthia Herriott-Sullivan says the man in his 20s was considered high risk and wanted for attempted murder and other violent crimes. When they moved in, the suspect ran through back yards firing at officers. Two fired back, and the suspect died a short time later at the hospital.
Chief Herriott-Sullivan says she ordered officers to observe the suspect and not move in until he was away from other people, because he was with relatives and friends. She says they tried to arrest him near Hudson Avenue and Durnan Street, and the officers fired back in a yard or driveway on Avenue D.
