Search for the next police chief to begin soon

The search will soon begin for the next chief of the Durham Regional Police Services.
The Durham Regional Police Services Board announced recently the consultation process for the selection of the next chief will begin and a Request for Proposals has been issued to solicit interest in supporting the board in this process. The RFP is posted at https://durham.bidsandtenders.ca/Module/Tenders/en/Tender/Detail/e7c2fcce-c0ca-4e75-af73-31e85330707c.
According to DRPS Board Chair Bobbie Drew, choosing the chief of police is one of the board’s most important responsibilities.

The day before Cathy Parkes s father died, she went to see him through the window of his Pickering, Ont., long-term care home.
Paul Parkes, 86, had been suffering from a urinary tract infection and wasn t getting enough water.
A personal support worker said he wouldn t take fluids. Cathy asked if her father could be sent to hospital. She says the home refused. I saw what he looked like in his casket when we had the viewing and he was a completely different man than what I had seen just weeks before, she told CBC News.
Durham police say they won’t be making random stops

Durham Regional Police Services (DRPS) say they will not be stopping random vehicles or pedestrians in the community.
According to a statement released by DRPS, officers “will not be conducting random vehicle or pedestrian stops in our community under this new legislation.”
Premier Doug Ford announced an extended stay-at-home order of an additional two weeks and further lockdown measures Friday, April 16 in an effort to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
As part of the new measures, the province says police will have enhanced enforcement measures to stop anyone in the community.
Task Force on community safety holds first meeting
Discussion included issues surrounding Oshawa’s downtown

The inaugural meeting of the mayor’s new task force on community safety, security and well-being saw discussion on the need to address issues in the city’s downtown.
The virtual meeting, held on Jan. 29, includes Mayor Dan Carter, Regional and City Councillor Bob Chapman (task force chair), and representatives from Durham Regional Police Services, Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce, social service agencies, local business community, community partners, and residents.
Members discussed addressing downtown issues using a broad and holistic approach, the city’s current bylaws related to safety, how residents and businesses can report safety and security related incidents, and the importance of ongoing proactive communications.
New task force to look at community safety

The mayor has announced a new task force aimed at addressing community safety, security and wellbeing issues in the city.
Chaired by Deputy Mayor Bob Chapman, the task force plans to address key issues in multiple phases, starting with the city’s downtown.
“We’re looking to engage with people in the downtown and to hear their concerns,” says Chapman. “And then determine how can we help improve some of those concerns and what can we do to help make people feel safer in their home community.”
