Arkansas journalism and politics lost a giant last week.
Charlotte Tillar Schexnayder, longtime editor and publisher of The Dumas Clarion and influential member of the Arkansas House of Representatives, died Dec. 11.
Charlotte was the first woman appointed to the Arkansas Board of Pardons and Parole, and she was the first female president of the Dumas Chamber of Commerce. She was also president of several associations for professional journalists, including the Arkansas Press Women, the Arkansas Press Association, the National Federation of Press Women, and the National Newspaper Association.
She won pretty much every accolade there is for a journalist, was inducted into the Arkansas Womenâs Hall of Fame, and was a close friend to Governor and President Bill Clinton. Charlotte made a difference, both in print and in politics, and she could never be replaced â she was truly one of a kind.
