MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Gov. Tim Walz on Monday released the education portion of his budget proposal, aiming to address short- and long-term effects of the pandemic while putting the focus on racial equity and inclusion.
The plan, named the Due North Education Plan, attempts to address the pandemic s toll on school systems statewide by expanding academic programs and mental health services starting in the summer of 2021 that will last throughout the following school year, and by providing a one-time investment to schools to prevent an impact due to enrollment loss during the pandemic.

MINNEAPOLIS Gov. Tim Walz on Monday released the education portion of his budget proposal, aiming to address short- and long-term effects of the pandemic while putting the focus on racial equity and inclusion.
The plan, named the Due North Education Plan, attempts to address the pandemic’s toll on school systems statewide by expanding academic programs and mental health services starting in the summer of 2021 that will last throughout the following school year, and by providing a one-time investment to schools to prevent an impact due to enrollment loss during the pandemic.
Walz, a former public school teacher, said during a media briefing on Monday that the proposal aims to also reduce racial inequity in Minnesota schools. Those measures include the creation of an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Center within the state education department, recruitment and retention of more diverse teachers, and anti-bias training for school staff.

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is hoping to address the immediate impact of the pandemic by releasing a new education plan.
The goal of the ‘Due North Education Plan is to make sure every child has access to a world-class education no matter their race or zip code.
During a press conference on Monday, Walz said, “We re going to have to first and foremost recover from COVID. We re going to have to make extra opportunities available to bring our kids back to where they need to be and change that system to look towards the future. We ve learned a lot during COVID. Not only things that don t work but things that do work for kids.”

On Monday, Gov. Tim Walz announced the Due North Education Plan, and several officials touted it but didn’t mention how it would be funded.
The
two-page plan mentions vague goals but gives no hard metrics to achieve.
Officials claimed the Due North Education Plan aims to ensure every child in Minnesota receives a high-quality education, no matter their race or zip code.
“As a former classroom teacher for over 20 years, I’ve seen firsthand how a high-quality education shapes students’ lives for years to come,” Walz said in a statement. “The Due North Education Plan guides us toward a future where every child receives a high-quality education, no matter their race or zip code.”
