Lightning sparked a fire at an apartment in northeast iowa this morning. Firefighters from four departments responded just after 5 this morning to the apartment at main and jefferson streets. Firefighters say no one was hurt in the fire. In polk city, a person died after a house caught on fire. Firefighters responded to the home, located north of des moines, just before 9 last night. Fire investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked the flames. It took crews about 15 least 1 person did escape, but crews found a body of someone else in the basement. The victims name is not yet public. Cedar rapids fire investigators say a fire at rileys caf near downtown cedar rapids started in or near a ventilation fan by the dishwashing area. Its located at 836 1st avenue east. It took firefighters more than an hour to get control of the fire that broke out before 4 pm yesterday. Today the jury will continue deliberations at 9 this morning in the trial of a man accused of fatally stabbing his former girlfriend. On friday, the jury heard closing arguments and started to discuss their decision on the case. The prosecution says 33yearold Nicholas Luerkens ambushed and stabbed his former girlfriend several times in the marion hyvee parking lot. They say there is clear and overwhelming evidence that he planned 29yearold Lynnsey Donalds murder back in april. While the defense admits luerkens did stab her multiple times, they say he was in an extreme depressive state. It contends that luerkens was overusing anti depressant medication at the time. Earlier in the week, a reading from a journal he found in luerkens apartment. It had a todo list and killing donald was on it. On friday, the prosecution told jurors luerkens intention couldnt be clearer. But luerkens defense lawyer suggested a 2nd degree murder conviction instead of first degree because of his clients mental
