it s a long that sparks controversy and outrage as well as sympathy and imitators. today the supreme court told arizona it went too far in trying to stem illegal immigration, taking matters into its own hand that constitutionally belongs to the federal government. the justices struck down three major portions of the law but upheld one of the most controversial provisions. kate bolduan has more. kate, what does the ruling say? hey, joe, it was a big day at the supreme court. one that has both sides trying to spin the ruling in their favor. the high court put the brakes on aggressive state efforts to crack down on immigration, at least for now. from the arizona border to the usz supreme court, the justices offered a split decision on the controversial, illegal immigration law. known as sb 1070. writing for the majority in the 4-3 ruling. justice anthony kennedy said arizona may have understandable frustrations with the problems caused by illegal immigration. but the state m
secretary john bryson is in the hospital after being cited for a felony hit-and-run. he crashed into a stopped car over the weekend twice and left the scene and hit a second car. they found him unconscious behind his wheel. brianna keeler is live at the white house this morning. what exactly happened? reporter: well, this happened in the los angeles area in about the 5:00 local hour on saturday. according to the l.a. sheriff s department, secretary bryson, behind the wheel of a lexus, allegedly hit a car, a buick that was stopped at a railroad crossing. there were three guys in the car. according to this press release, he got out and talked to them and then went on his way. as he did so, hit the buick yet again. at that point the buick tailed him and called 911 and the next time when police did find bryson, he was in his car, this pregs release alleged and unconscious and apparently hit another car, a honda accord. the first accident happening in san gabriel and second in
canceled many vacation plans. everyone from back home is calling us telling us that the storm is rolling in. so we decided that instead of staying and hanging out tomorrow, we re going to go back to gainesville. it will be an indoors day tomorrow for sure. reporter: in some parts of the country it s the lack of rain causing problems. making the battle against wildfires in several states more difficult. in new mexico, a fire in the hela national forest has burned through more than 150 square miles. in michigan, campers were forced to evacuate as more than 21,000 acres burned, fueled by dry winds and high temperatures. those record highs can be felt across much of the nation. but out in northern california, it s not the warmth but the chill in the air. it s freezing. we thought we were going to go up to the sun in tahoe. reporter: it has people double checking the date on their calendar. kurt gregory, nbc news.
