Joint Rivers Commission official says he will send demi official letter to his Indian counterpart in regards to reports of 2 canals being dug from transboundary Teesta River.
While Bangladesh has been waiting 12 years to sign the Teesta water-sharing treaty with India, West Bengal made a unilateral move to divert more water from the river for hydropower plants and new irrigation projects.
West Bengal is planning to dig two new canals to divert more water from the river for irrigation and set up two hydropower projects on a tributary of the river, which will further worsen the sufferings of farmers in Bangladesh.
Experts have slammed the chairman of National River Conservation Commission for commenting that West Bengal will not be able to give Teesta water to Bangladesh in the lean season.
