the accountability center and coauthor of peace, high crimes, the in-depth case for trump s impeachment that breeks down the articles president trump may face. elizabeth, thanks for being with us. what might be the articles of impeachment that this president may face? i think in contrast to some of the other efforts you just went through, what is at the heart of the impeachable offi s offenses by president trump is his foreign corruption. that s something of the drafters of our constitution were specifically concerned about when they wrote the impeachment clause into the constitution. in our piece for the new republic, we specifically looked at, first, the most obvious, the president leveraging his office and the american national interest in order to pressure foreign governments for his own political gain. obviously, the ukraine matter that has been front and center. then, of course, the second article that we suggest is his
obstruction of justice, trying to keep his wrongdoing, keep his corruption from coming to light. as adam schiff alluded to, george mason, one of the drafters of the constitution, said should the person who is most capable of committing injustice himself be above justice, and of course the answer our constitution gives is no. no one is above the law, including the president. finally, we included in our piece, even though it might be something that comes out of the judiciary committee, the president s violation of the foreign emoluments cause that prohibits officials from getting gifts, profits, benefits, advantages from foreign governments, something we know that the president through his expansive foreign business dealings has been doing since day one. and the problem with that is that we as americans don t know whether or not when he acts on the world stage, whether he s acting to line his own pockets or in the best interests of
michael, as you well know, being one of the drafters, the word bribery is in the constitution as it concerns impeachment. the president, vice president, and all civil officers of the u.s. should be removed from office on impeachment for conviction of treason, bribery, and other high crimes and zme misdemeanors. that s one reason she likes that word. why else? when i started with you i said there was a messaging challenge for those seeking the impeachment of the president. does this fall in the category of watergate? hay, that s a burglary. we all know what means. or is it white water? a very complicated land transaction. i would suggest to you that when you re speaking of quid pro quo, you re in the white water turf.
