he was acquitted by a military court. however, gallagher was found guilty of posing with the dead militant s body. the president denounced the investigation against the s.e.a.l. joining us right now on the phone, nbc news national security reporter courtney kube who s been reporting on the story. courtney, tell us about richard spencer. tell us about why president trump is so interested in this one navy s.e.a.l. s case. richard spencer is a politically appointed secretary of the navy. trump appointed him to the position. president trump has weighed into it several times, at first getting him moved out of the jail cell he was in months ago, and then a military court acquitted him of a charge in murder in 2017. there are a number of people who ve been whispering in president trump s ear about this case.
the one who has been the most vocal and out front is pete heg staff a fox news creditor and former military. and president trump has been listening to him. so once gallagher was acquitted, that wasn t the end of the procedural part from the u.s. navy. they announced it several days ago he is now going to face a t trident review board, whether he may have his trident pin revoked, the pin they get when theyback become a navy s.e.a.l. he wouldn t be downgraded in status or rank, but he would lose his status as a navy s.e.a.l. so president trump weighed in saying that the navy will not be allowed to do that, causing the secretary of state the navy richard spencer to consider resigning if, in fact, the president goes forward with this. courtney kube with the latest on this nbc news breaking story. thank you so much from our national security reporter. appreciate it, courtney. up next, republicans
