produced and cheap. but by the end of world war ii, volkswagen was looking to expand and set its sights on america s deep pockets. so, how do you take a tiny car built for nazi mass consumption and sell it to america? advertising. the ad campaign that really changed the advertising industry and basically changed it for all time was ads for volkswagen, which started in 1959. they were put together by a very famous ad agency called doyle dane and back, or dd&b. we were always about engaging the intellect, engaging the sense of humor, engaging the consumer on the consumer s terms. in contrast to the multicolor, multipage inserts general motors was running, there was a single-page, black-and-white, lots of quotes, wasted white
and then the second catalyst for this phenomenon was something we don t talk about much, mccain-feingold. those law passed back in 2002 by limited contributions to political parties helped divert the flow of money to outside spending groups and super pacs we re talking about here but also into think tanks, and policy institutes, things like media matters monitoring the truthfulness of various cable outlets. and so you ve seen this kind of calculation by money interest, rich individuals, and folks with money in this country that you might be able to achieve the political outcomes better by bypassing these old structures and creating your own ways to slug it out in the political arena. maybe the question we should be asking, is the proliferation of thing takes, weakening the parties as mediators of the political debate, and is a is that a bad thing or a good thing? let me close on this point because i think it s anothe

[applause] in fact if you remember the original agenda of the so-called tea party movement was its complaint against the bailout of wall street, but biden by maneuvers that i don t entirely comprehend, it was largely taken over by the republican party. i think the republican party is starting to have second thoughts about it, but the protests of the occupy wall street movement remind me very much in the protests of the 1890s where it first when the populist got together they didn t have much of an agenda, but they had a sense that rings had really gone wrong. and people who work hard were not being rewarded. people who were suffering the consequences of other people s sins and missteps and in a country that was premised on the american dream, that dream became harder and harder to realize. and so they simply began to protest at first. they didn t know quite what they wanted to do, except to let people know that they were fed up with it. it is very early to
