The site is expected to deliver up to 6,000 shots of COVID-19 vaccine a day. California is opening up COVID-19 vaccines on Monday to a new group: those age 16 to 64 with disabilities or with qualifying health conditions that put them at greater risk of severe illness or death if they become infected.

Part of San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Cullinan Ranch is former farmland that is being restored into a tidal marsh. The vast marsh of Cullinan Ranch has had a lot of incarnations over the past few decades, from farmland to legal battlefield to tidal restoration, so I decided to visit the site with some of the people who know it best. The interview felt like a field trip, probably because wetland biologist Francesca Demgen is used to showing students around. She points out quirks of the environment, identifies birds and even has our photograph Doug and I sample some pickleweed.

Where is everybody? Sure, it’s a Tuesday, but I somehow have the 44-acre Bayview Park almost entirely to myself on a sunny afternoon. Aside from one woman and her dog, and a few city workers I saw driving to the radio tower, the trails are empty, and the 360-degree view that includes the bay, the downtown skyline, and the Bay Bridge is unobstructed. Birds are chirping loudly, towering eucalyptus trees sway in the breeze and the distant sound of Highway 101 hums in the background.

But one of the biggest differences between a bar and restaurant being allowed to remain open has been the requirement that bars must sell food alongside any alcohol. Although some drinking establishments have an attached kitchen, allowing them to remain open during the pandemic, many bars were forced to partner with restaurants, food trucks or pop-ups to meet the requirement to remain open for outdoor service.
