Wichita man gets prison for trying to smuggle drug-laced paper into Larned prison
LARNED – A Wichita man convicted of conspiring to send drug-soaked paper disguised as legal mail to inmates at the Larned Mental Health Correctional Facility was sentenced this week to 21 months in prison.
Shane Michael Slater, 38, appeared before Pawnee County District Court Judge Bruce Gatterman after previously entering a plea to one count of conspiracy to traffic controlled substances in a correctional facility, according to a release from the Pawnee County Attorney’s office.
The charge stemmed from an internal investigation by the Kansas Department of Corrections at the Larned Correctional Mental Health, which since 2017 has been a 330-bed unit for young adult male offenders rather than a mental health facility, though its name has not changed.
