Chef Velvet is now bringing vegan soul food to the Eastside. According to VegOut,
TheVTree is set to open a new location in
Silver Lake on March 13. Enjoy the flavor of soul food but all plant-based, from their Bourbon Baked BBQ Ribs and Mac and Cheese to their Sweet Potato Cheesecake and traditional African tea. The restaurant also sells their popular vegan meats on their website and ships across the country.
What used to be Puertos Del Pacifico (and still has remnants of it painted on the window) is now Mama D’s, the first African restaurant in Boyle Heights specializing in the cuisine of Cameroon.
Like many deep Los Angeles food gems, the restaurant is located in a frenzied strip mall on Soto Street, sandwiched between El Pollo Loco and Samurai Sushi. The family-run establishment is the latest business to take a risk on opening during a pandemic in the [real] Eastside, a calculated risk that seems to be paying off. During a recent dinner rush, the owner, Claudia Bih Wanki-Flinn, was busy filling Doordash and Postmates orders.
La Morra Pizzeria
Neapolitan pizza pop-up La Morra has opened a takeout window on West 3rd Street. Owners Zach Swemle and Marlee Blodgett are serving a half-dozen varieties of wood-fired pizza, including a vegan pie topped with marinated artichokes and pickled peppers. Parbaked frozen pizzas are available for customers to finish preparing at home.

Mama D’s African Cuisine
Mama D’s African Cuisine is open for takeout and delivery in Boyle Heights. The restaurant, which offers dishes from Cameroon and West Africa, is the second location of a popular restaurant in Maryland owned by Dorothy Wanki (her daughter Claudia oversees the L.A. location). Specialties include ndole, a stew of peanuts and bitter greens, and goat pepper soup.
