route to get people to where they need to go. but it is getting later and later. it is going to hit our state. i m asking people to evacuate and worry about their entire family and take care of your neighbors. if you see someone who needs help, go see and help them. and some of the people we have talked to, one woman i was talking to, there is this fear of the traffic, right? that they can t get out in time or running out of the gasoline. i know you have done a lot on the gas front trying to say you are going to escort gas in and escort them out. but it sounds like what you are saying is you really have a few hours left or you stay put. right. in the southern parts of the state, if you are not on the road by midnight, don t get on the road. we have shelters in all of our counties, other than the keys. you can go there. we have an 800 number. if you can t get there because
and as a result they re getting stranded and we have to respond to them with the 911 calls. but there is no question, no doubt in my mind, that the best decision and the right decision was to tell houstonians and people in harris county, don t get on the road. don t try to evacuate. you can t put 6.5 million people on the road a day or two ahead of the storm without making it more dangerous for them. so without hesitation or doubt, i would make the same decision if we had it to do again. one of the top five largest cities in our country. you have a lot to govern there, mr. mayor. sylvester turner, thank you for the update and hopefully we re getting word to folks in your area in terms of what you would like them to do. thank you. let s bring out more on tropical storm harvey. where it might be going. getting close to houston again with more rain. shawn mendiola our meteorologist. shawn, what s the latest? i want to point out this
get back? and what s the distance twin where you were in this hotel and houston and new brunfels, home? it s normally a two hour drive. there were a couple ladies i helped out along the way, they followed me out, and we worked as a team. and we just kind of helped each other get out of that situation. once we got on the highway, it was a little sketchy getting on 610. we got on the 610, there were a few places that were high. like the governor and the mayor said, don t get on the road. it was crucial at times, and it could be looked at like a bone head or i made it through it. i think it s kind of dumb getting through it, but i made it. i didn t use my better judgment.
these areas. well, i don t think we re even going to get to a hotel tonight, i really don t. i think we re going to be stuck on the roadway here, driving one or two miles per hour because these roads are flooded. they re completely shut down. the managers are saying the managers are saying please, don t get on the road. well, we have to. we re trying to get to a hotel. and we re trying to bring you the pictures. i just don t know how that s going to go. when you get 10 inches of rain we had 10 inches of rain in many areas, from that area back across into mustang and into southwest, oklahoma city. and even northern parts of moore, 6-8 inchings of rain there. this water doesn t go very far. it s not like it s going to run off very quickly. this is flat land. and this is clay. so this run off is going to be dangerous.
so it will be a can the 1 or very strong tropical storm when it makes impact in the keys. a lot of buildings and houses in the area, plywood off on the doors and windows and you can see the key west humor down there, it says get twisted. certainly there are a lot of hurricane parties going on, with those people who did stay down here. but monroe county emergency management director advising for the rest of the day, if you did not leave the islands yesterday, stay put. don t get on the road. it s going to be too dangerous. not only is there a hurricane warning for the keys, but a tornado watch for miami dade county. all right. phil kateing in key west, where that is expected to hit. phil, take care, thanks. recent polling shows the race for the president is getting
