Escondido library's shelves, once brimming with titles, now lay bare

Print Long-time Escondido library volunteer Virgina Abushanab doesn’t like what she sees when she looks at the racks of shelving in the city library. Perhaps more to the point, she’s not thrilled about what she doesn’t see books. “Over the past four years, ever since the company LS&S took over, there has been a relentless purging of our library shelves,” Abushanab wrote last month in a letter to the Escondido City Council, the library board of trustees, the library director and deputy city manager. “The people ‘deselecting’ books from the shelves have removed so many, what remains makes our once beloved library look sickly. There are so few books left that the whole idea of browsing and coming upon an unknown delight is gone.”

Nesting migratory birds posing challenges for Lindo Lake fixes

LAKESIDE  The two main water features at Lakeside’s Lindo Lake Park and 24 acres of the park itself are undergoing a huge revitalization thanks to more than $8 million in long-awaited upgrades paid for by the county. San Diego County officials say that the project, designed to improve the water quality and habitat for local wildlife, is under the close watch of an in-house biologist and environmental lead with extensive experience and that it is taking steps to ensure the well-being of the animals in the area. But local environmentalists are raising concerns about some of the upgrades. They say a plan to drain the east basin of Lindo Lake will do irreparable harm to some of its most vulnerable residents birds and their babies-to-be.

Road repairs start this week on popular Mt. Helix Drive

MOUNT HELIX    Work begins this week on a project to repair and restripe the roads leading to and from the top of Mount Helix. But some residents want the work postponed until they can bring a full proposal to the county that addresses continuing safety issues on the curvy, narrow, one-way roads. An email from the county to Krista Powers, executive director of the Mt. Helix Park Foundation, says contractors will be working in stages on the project, starting with the removal of existing road striping on Monday and Tuesday. Road resurfacing operations are scheduled for April 26 and April 27 with new road striping tentatively scheduled for May 3 and May 4. The county told Powers the road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on days work is scheduled.

Despite protests, trees are scheduled for removal in Lakeside

LAKESIDE    The county confirmed Monday that two dozen jacaranda trees will be removed by Friday in Lakeside, dashing hopes of the community that they could be saved. San Diego County spokeswoman Donna Durckel said that the trees that line a vacant lot on Woodside Avenue are still scheduled for removal by a private contractor this week to make way for a new San Diego County library. Grading started Monday for the 16,400-square-foot library, which will be three times larger than the nearly 60-year-old branch two blocks away. The new $19 million facility will have a community room for events, a bookstore and large spaces for children and teenagers.
