Long-time Escondido library volunteer Virgina Abushanab doesn’t like what she sees when she looks at the racks of shelving in the city library. Perhaps more to the point, she’s not thrilled about what she doesn’t see books.
“Over the past four years, ever since the company LS&S took over, there has been a relentless purging of our library shelves,” Abushanab wrote last month in a letter to the Escondido City Council, the library board of trustees, the library director and deputy city manager.
“The people ‘deselecting’ books from the shelves have removed so many, what remains makes our once beloved library look sickly. There are so few books left that the whole idea of browsing and coming upon an unknown delight is gone.”
