Gov. Greg Abbott will have a Republican primary opponent in 2022.
Former State Sen. Don Huffines, a frequent critic of Abbott’s handling of the pandemic, announced Monday that he is running for governor in 2022. In his announcement, Huffines blasted politicians who make promises they don’t keep.
“I’m tired of being lied to. We all are,” Huffines said. “That’s why I’m running for Texas governor.”
Huffines, 63, is a Dallas Republican who, along with his brother, co-founded Huffines Communities, a real estate development company. Huffines was in the Texas Senate from 2015 to 2019 when he was defeated for re-election by Democrat Nathan Johnson, despite having Abbott’s endorsement.
