The Flatwater Free Press asked two-dozen experts, including farmers, ranchers, NRD board members, NRD directors, ag industry lobbyists, scientists, soil and water experts and more how we get out of this nitrate problem.
Their answers show broad consensus around the idea that Nebraska needs to do more, but there was ample disagreement on if to take aggressive steps, like forcing the ag industry to clean up polluted water instead of Nebraska taxpayers.
A “humongous” amount of nitrate has already seeped into the vadose zone – the stretch of earth between the surface soil and the groundwater – where it will continue to leach into the water for years to come.
