Whether it’s real estate, hotels or often even restaurants, some places cost less.
The same is often true with wine.
You often pay a lot more for wines from certain places like California’s Napa Valley or Italy’s Tuscany region.
You also often pay a premium for wines from certain wineries. Just like luxury brand names like a purse from Hermes or a car from Lamborghini, be prepared to shell out a small fortune for wines from Chateau Latour or Petrus in Bordeaux or Domaine Leroy in Burgundy.
Sales of six-litre
methuselahs helped to propel the vaunted Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) to the head of Sotheby’s’ list of top 10 wine and spirits producers by sales in 2020.
It’s the eighth consecutive year that DRC has topped the rankings.
Sotheby’s sold $19.4m of the famous Burgundy producer’s wines last year, it said in its latest annual market report.
The group’s total wine and spirits auction sales fell in 2020, coming in at $92m versus a record-breaking $118m in 2019.
Yet the 2020 total was also the third highest in the past eight years. Sotheby’s and other auction houses have continued to report relatively strong demand from buyers over the past year or so, accompanied by a more rapid transition to online sales.

US auctioneer Hart Davis Hart has completed its 2020 season with a two-day record shattering sale featuring the wines from the late Joseph Phelps cellar.
For a total of US $10.4 million, the entire collection was 100 percent sold, almost $2m above the high pre-sale estimate, with 82 percent of the lots offered selling above their high estimates as well.
Last Friday s first session included the wine cellar of the late Joseph Phelps. In total, it made $2.2 million (above a high estimate of $1.3 million) with buyers jumping at the opportunity to purchase Lafite Rothschild 1865 and 1948 bottles ($31,070 each) and 11 Latour 1959 bottles ($77,675) and 12 Latour 1961 bottles ($23,900), and rare Californian classics 1971 Ridge Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard (two bottles selling for $20,315-a new record), 1974 Heitz Cellar, Martha s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, 1978 Joseph Phelps Eisele Vineyard and Insignia, as well as great Burgundy.
