A group of French wine thieves may be experiencing a case of sour grapes after they escaped, but had to abandon their haul of fine wine worth hundreds of thousands of euros in order to get away.
Early on Tuesday, the burglars broke into the cellar at the Domaine de Rymska, a hotel in the Burgundy region known for its wine, and stole bottles estimated to be worth the equivalent of nearly $430,000, Decanter reported, citing Le Journal de Saône-et-Loire, a local newspaper.
The thieves loaded the stolen wine into a van and were ready to escape, but they inadvertently set off a fire alarm during the break-in, according to the reports. That woke up the hotel’s owner, who called police.

French wine thieves began throwing their pricey score at pursuing police cars Tuesday morning in a costly escape strategy, the Guardian reported.
The thirsty thieves hit the luxury Domaine de Rymska hotel in the eastern French countryside, about 85 miles north of Lyon, according to the Guardian. The hotel’s wine list includes many expensive vintages, including at least one that goes for 16,000 euros (almost $20,000) per bottle.
After making off with an estimated $425,000 worth of wine, the thieves were pursued on country roads by the hotel’s owner, the Guardian reported. The owner called police while following the robbers, and the cops took up the chase at a main road.

Fine wine thieves stole an estimated €350,000 of wines, including grand cru bottles, from Domaine de Rymska, a luxury Relais & Châteaux hotel and restaurant south of Beaune.
After breaking into the hotel’s cellars in the early hours of Tuesday morning (5 January), the burglars attempted to escape with their loot in a van.
But, the hotel’s owner was woken by a fire alarm and quickly alerted police, according to local newspaper
