new york times and it s good to see you. okay so in his address to u.s. congress, president zelenskyy pleaded for a no-fly zone over ukraine yet again. so what he is really asking for here is air supremacy over ukraine. means like blowing russian air bases, anti-aircraft batteries, so when he asks is that too much, at this point, the answer seems yes but under what circumstances could that change? well, the answer so far has been yes and that s pretty understandable. if no-fly zone sounds pretty passive, you know, sounds like you are sort of mapping out an area, telling everybody don t go there but somebody s got to enforce it and when you enforce it, you ehave got the risk that you would have american or nato planes in dog fights with russian pilots coming in to go over ukraine presuming those russian pilots don t respect the no-fly zone. and part of enforcing a no-fly
northeast of kyiv, using artillery, javelins, and turkey sold armed drones to ukraine and delivered them just before the russian invasion. they have been very effective the way the ukrainian armed forces have organized themselves with the anti-tank javelins and kept the air defenses intact. so russia cannot use their air force over ukraine. that has been the biggest factor so far in stopping the russian military in the skies. they are not engaging in dog fights, per se, with ukrainian fighter jets, but shooting down but the ukrainians are shooting down russian fighter jets from the ground and that has the russians fearful, fearful of flying into ukraine. u.s. officials say one tank column en route to the capital literally out of gas for five days and then ordered to stop heading toward the capital. the migs, i m told, have not necessarily been maintained, and would require some work.
shoot down russian aircraft in dog fights over the skies over ukraine. and lowest reward because most of the devastation that we re seeing in cities like kyiv and mariupol and kharkiv is not coming from the sky. it s coming from artillery on the ground, coming from rocket fire, missiles fired from the ground. so to have any impact on that a no-fly zone would immediately have to become a no drive zone with the u.s. air force firing on every russian unit they see on the ground surrounding these cities. if you re for that, okay, but be aware that the say it, be honest about the fact that you re advocating for the united states to get involved in a war directly with russia. and finally, i would say i think putin wants us to get involved in a way. the russians don t want there s no motivation in russia to be killing ukrainians. this is one reason why the russian army, i think, is slowly
