be we should note to that point, this order doesn t take effect until march 16. this is not something that takes effect like that, and again, as we re having the conversation on this fast-breaking story, the house democratic leader to your point, carkaren, nancy pelosi s take two, changes nothing. she calls it immoral and unconstitutional. we know the democrats will argue constitutionally against it. we know legally we re going to end up back in courts. the first roll-out, general kelly has taken the hit. he says i take responsibility for this. we know from our reporting that he and other cabinet secretaries were largely blindsided when the first travel ban came out. it was orchestrated by senior staff at the white house level. listen to secretary kelly today making the case no one should be surprised this time because we re going to do this in a calculated way. i have spent much of date on the phone explaining the ins and outs. i did the same thing last week.
do about this big progress, right, shrinking the uninsured rate. here are the numbers. about 29 million people right now uninsured. the urban institute says if you just repeal obamacare, you ll have close to 60 million. democrats say that is a huge political burden for republicans. republicans say, well, we re going to replace it. we re going to have a new system to do it, but democrats at the moment say, go ahead. just repealing obamacare, even though they have nothing to put in its place and saying they ll do it some time down the road will cause huge calamity from one end of america to the other. they don t know what to do. they are like the dog that caught the bus. they are like the dog that caught the bus. republicans are saying they are going to do it right out of the box, but they are going to also have a however, semicolon in there, that says we repeal it, but the repeal doesn t take effect until two years down the line, three years down the line? this is procedurally the
forced to do it this way because under the senate rules you can actually avoid a filibuster by repealing most of the law, doing it through the budget process and that s going to happen in january, but you can t replace the law by avoiding a senate filibuster. you need to get democratic support in the senate. you need 60 votes. that means eight democrats, 52 republicans, and it s going to be very difficult for republicans to stay united, let alone get democrats onboard. you re already hearing democratic leaders say we re not going to work with republicans on replacement. if you re going to repeal the law, you re going to own all the problems that come with it. so that s one of the problems. the other one is that if you repeal the law, some believe even if there s a two or three-year transition period, a lot of insurers are going to pull out of the market right away, others will, as well, and create chaos in the market before a replacement takes effect. so even though they can do a repea
that goes against low-income people and middle income people but feels okay because it doesn t take effect right away. but the question for is do you support it. no, i oppose it. it is a bad idea. it hurts people that put so much into the system and worked so hard. one of the things i like to remind people is social security and medicare are not entitlements. they are earned benefits. people work their whole life to get them. this is a very washington discussion that s happening right here. this is on the table. you know, let s put other stuff on the table. i agree. i totally agree that. put more on the table. let s talk about other things. problem is that the gang of 32, you cannot get down to this granular level of a conversation because when they say protect and strengthen social security, that is their way of saying, let s cut benefits so that it is still around. where you don t need to cut benefits. you know, the real problem is because ultimately the republicans
they plan to keep arresting people just as they do now for pot related offenses. their argument in spokane is the only legal way to get pot in washington even after this new state law goes into effect will be to buy that pot from a state regulated pot store. and those state regulated pot stores don t exist yet, but they might soon be created if the federal government allows that to happen and nobody knows that the government will allow them to happen. this is policy soup, and i don t mean this as a munchies joke. this doesn t make any sense yet. joining us for the interview is neil frank linn. he served in law enforcement for 30 years as a narcotics officer with the maryland state police and is commander of training for the baltimore police department. thanks for joining us. thanks for having me. what a great lead-in. you are familiar with the laws than i am. did i get the contours of that
