because the tears streaming down their face and the little peace signs they throw up for photos is enough for me. scott, listen, i think everyone wants a very strict vetting process here, but just respond. yeah, look, i support the vetting. i think the vetting is going on. and i agree with what you said. i think it will continue to go on. we have a long proud history of accepting refugees in this country. and we have a long proud history of supporting people who ve supported us. i m in kentucky tonight. and we have several hundred afghan refugees, i think the first families are just now arriving in kentucky. i m proud they re coming here. i m proud to live in a state where we re going to accept these folks because i agree with amanda. i think most of them are going to become the best americans. they ve already been working on our behalf. that doesn t mean we shouldn t continue to do the vetting process that i know is already under way. but to say that these people are going to show
reasons to continue to allow for some number of people to be able to transport out of the country, certainly american citizens. they ve got to keep that airport open. they re a land-locked country. they can t operate in an economy without a functioning airport. these are all questions the biden administration will have to answer, how do you continue moving people out of that country even after our 2500 to 5,000 troops leave. do you think america should recognize the taliban? some are being asked to recognize opposition forces that aren t necessarily running the country. it makes the united states look pretty weak when we re recognizing people that are leaders of the government that aren t actually running the government. but it doesn t mean we shouldn t be talking to the taliban. even though we don t formally recognize them, we ll have to be in conversations with them, they ll have to know the result of their actions if they don t allow people to get out of the country.
it is congress role, no matter who the president is, to ask these tough questions and not be satisfied until we have complete answers to all of them. it appears there was at least a misinterpretation of the intelligence or a lack of complete intelligence that would have shown just how precipitously the country would fall into the hands of the taliban. that doesn t mean we shouldn t have withdrawn. it means we should have. but, obviously, those are questions that we re going to need to have answered. partly because we have a responsibility to hold the administration accountable, but also, you know, history has to be informed by the facts. the only way we learn from our history is if it is clear and accurate. we have to make sure we create that record. new reporting this morning from nick paton walsh, who spoke with a senior official in afghanistan, who told him the man at the presidential palace who negotiated with the security
