The project is based on a proposal by architects under the Urban Revamp Design Challenge hosted by DULT and Sensing Local in 2022. Proposals were invited for Banaswadi and Doddanekundi: 40 ideas came up. Of these, 10 were shortlisted. At the time of introducing the challenge, it was announced that the winning design entries would be implemented by BBMP after review.
