The project is based on a proposal by architects under the Urban Revamp Design Challenge hosted by DULT and Sensing Local in 2022. Proposals were invited for Banaswadi and Doddanekundi: 40 ideas came up. Of these, 10 were shortlisted. At the time of introducing the challenge, it was announced that the winning design entries would be implemented by BBMP after review.
The pilot study - Walkable Bengaluru - was carried out in 19 wards, covering 350 km and 185 junctions using ‘Step Up’, a planning tool developed by the organisation, Sensing Local.
Ward committees were formulated to allow citizens to participate in ward-level decisions. BBMP had allocated Rs 60 lakh to each ward, out of which Rs 20 lakh would be allocated for pothole filling, Rs 20 lakh for borewell repairs and Rs 20 lakh on footpath fixing.
