Editor’s Note: The “Canol Project’’ described by Mr. Finnie is one of the most notable construction operations in Canadian history. It involves the opening up of an oil field on the Mackenzie River only 75 miles south of the Arctic circle, construction by the U. S. Army of l,6OO miles of oil pipe lines traversing subarctic wastes, intensive development of a 1 ,200-mile lake-and-river transport system, building of a refinery and many hundreds of miles of new highways, and construction of new key air routes through the Canadian northwest. .4 Washington report stales the project wiV cost ¿138,000,000.

In Colorado, much of the water is already spoken for, and it’s been that way for years. In these over-appropriated basins, water is put under administration to ensure senior water rights holders are getting the water they are owed.
In the Yampa River Basin, water management has generally been easier than in other parts of the state, said Andy Rossi, general manager of the Upper Yampa Water Conservancy District, in a presentation to the Board of Routt County Commissioners on Monday.
Brian E. Gorton
Brian E. Gorton, who began his career in 1987 as a Conrail conductor, has returned to his “home railroad” as President and Chief Operating Officer. He succeeds Timothy C. Tierney, who is retiring after nearly 43 years in the railroad industry.
Gorton advanced to Assistant Terminal Superintendent before departing “Big Conrail” in 1998, prior to CSX and Norfolk Southern splitting it up 58%/42%. (Conrail then transitioned to Conrail Shared Assets LLC, a neutral terminal and switching service provider for co-owners CSX and NS operating in Detroit, Southern New Jersey/Philadelphia and Northern New Jersey. Conrail also serves shippers and receivers located within its operating territories.) Gorton went to the Union Pacific, where he served in various capacities within the Transportation department. A striking, cyan-toned railroad map of New York State issued in 1867 by Jonas Platt Goodsell. The map offers expansive coverage of New York, as well as some of the adjacent states, including all of Vermont, western Massachusetts and Connecticut, and northern Pennsylvania. This map was issued in Godsell s final year as State Engineer and Surveyor, and indeed the final year of his life.
New York RailroadsThe railroad system came to New York early, with some companies operating as early as the 1820s. Nonetheless, most of these focused on the Hudson Valley and westward towards coal reserves in Pennsylvania. The state mountains interior, including the Catskills and Adirondack Mountains, however proved a long-term challenge for railroad development. Nonetheless, by 1867, when this map was issued, a network of railroads and canals began to penetrate the state, reaching the Finger Lakes, ports on Lake Ontario, and Syracuse
