Written feedback reveals what community, law enforcement panelists thought of police chief candidates

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: January 19, 2021 A My Edmonds News investigation got its first look Monday at the written feedback from two public panels that interviewed the candidates for police chief. This represents just a fraction of the records we have requested from the city; more is yet to come. On Monday, the city turned over to My Edmonds News the results of the community and law enforcement panels that interviewed Sherman Pruitt and James Lawless. Police chief finalists Jim Lawless, left, and Sherman Pruitt. Members of both panels thought each candidate was personable, well-spoken and brought ideas to their discussion. The community panel did not address Pruitt’s police leadership experience; the law enforcement panel thought his lack of management experience in a larger city could be a challenge.

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: January 15, 2021 Pat Valle Pat Valle, recently retired from the Edmonds Diversity Commission, offered the following statement on her five years with the commission, where she served since its founding in 2015, and most recently served as chair: As the last founding member of the Edmonds Diversity Commission, stepping down now after five years of service, I would like to offer some history and observations of the commission and its work. The fall of 2015 brought this new commission to Edmonds. Established by the Edmonds City Council, the Diversity Commission is charged with promoting and embracing diversity through action, education, and guidance. The commission seeks to foster an understanding that includes, accepts, respects and appreciates each individual member of our community through programs, activities and policy actions. The commission advises the mayor and city council on issues related to equity, inclusion and diversity.

City of Edmonds Arts Commission offering 2021 grant opportunities for artists, nonprofits

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: December 19, 2020 397 The City of Edmonds Arts Commission will offer two single opportunity grants in early January for artists and nonprofit arts and culture organizations based in Edmonds. Applications will be available after the City 2021 Operating Budget is approved (December 2020). The application deadline will be in late January 2021. Projects must be completed in 2021. The Small Grant Program will have a total of $5,000 available for small grants of $100 – $1,000 for arts-based projects to support creativity, diversity, and access to arts in Edmonds through literary, visual, or performing arts. Creating a Future grant program has a total of $50,000 available for awards between $1,000 and $10,000. The purpose of this grant opportunity is to help build and reinforce a diverse and equitable cultural community in Edmonds, recognizing the uncertainty and challenges the COVID-19 pandemic directives, and the necessity of changing strategies to c

The Governor of Iowa has declared a Public Emergency because of the COVID-19 outbreak. The Mayor has determined that an in-person meeting of the City Council is impossible or impractical without violating the Governor’s mandates. When an in-person meeting is “impossible or impractical,” Iowa Code Section 21.8 permits a governmental body to conduct a meeting by electronic means. The meeting will be conducted by video conference using ZOOM from the Council Chambers. The Mayor and necessary City staff will be in the Council Chambers. The 7 Council members will not be in the chambers but will participate via ZOOM conferencing. Comments for items that are on the agenda or for the Public Hearing may be made by submitting them prior to the meeting to the City Clerk, Mayor or any of the Council members or by calling 319-596-0179 during the meeting.
