at the arab league? i can t say that anybody was surprised. we all saw this coming. i mean there s been this gradual disengagement from the west, from the u.s. in particular, about what s happening in syria, and a gradual, you know, shifting of moods in the arab world, which was started mostly by the united arab emirates. saudi arabia was the last one, and we knew that the minute that the saudis would say, yes, let s do it, it was going to be a done deal. i think most of us are pretty numb by now. we saw this coming. i personally see this not only as a victory for bashar al assad but really as a victory for the entire authoritarian nature of the arab world and, you know, putting everything that the the young people in particular in the arab world have gone through for the last 12 years and saying, we are not going to talk anymore about the arab spring. it s not going to happen again, and making everybody face the new reality that we have today.
lots of countries will try to benefit from the us china economic disengagement to a certain extent, and if the uk only sides with one party, i m not sure it s the smartest thing to do. don t side. and india has always been very smart in never taking any sides. it s fine to push china back on certain economic rules and practices. and look, the chinese are open to negotiations and talking. the uk and the chinese economy are highly complementary. uk needs investment. china has plenty of investment. china looks to uk s innovative power, knowledge economy. it sees the country as as a hub, even though with brexit, but still a very important global hub. no one thinks the golden era of economic relations with china is coming back. the challenge today, to walk a razor s edge and make a living
she described china is not only a threat to taiwan but a threat to the whole of the free and democratic world, and among certain people in taiwan and this region, there will be some disquiet at the way she has reinvented herself as very much a hard line china hawk, and is calling for deep disengagement from china notjust by taiwan but the whole of this region and in effect the whole of the free, democratic world. some of the things she talked about, disengaging on china on all sorts of levels, building an economic nato, a network of liberty around the world, dividing the world between the hard line authoritarian regimes ha rd line authoritarian regimes of hard line authoritarian regimes of china and russia, iran and north korea and the rest of the world. a lot of people will be somewhat disquieted by that depiction of the future. thank ou ve depiction of the future. thank you very much- around the world and across
