down. emergency response teams are working together. the disaster wiping out power to homes and businesses. and the u.s. coast guard has rescued 12 people off of the waters of lahaina. they jumped into the ocean to escape the smoke and fire conditions. some residents comparing the scene to an apocalypse. people are running for their lives. reporter: many are saying they are homeless. our house is gone. everyone i know in lahaina, their homes have been burned down. similar to santa ana winds, the winds that move over the topography of maui, went through basic processes. it warmed up and dried out and the speed of the wind increases as it moved down the slopes of the mountains.
