good friday evening to you. jim sciutto here sitting in for anderson. tonight making sense of the unprecedented look we ve just gotten into what until now was almost unimaginable, the criminal investigation of a former president. it follows the equally unprecedented court-approved search of a former president s home. today under orders from the same federal judge who approved that search warrant, the justice department released the affidavit backing the warrant. the document laying out the government s case that a search could yield evidence of a crime or even multiple crimes. it is heavily redacted to protect sources, potential witnesses, as well as the ongoing investigation of not just the president but also, quoting the document now, all potential criminal confederates. that said, there is much it does reveal, starting with what investigators believe they would find beyond the 15 boxes that were returned to the government in january. quoting again, there is probable cause
kentucky showing some of the damage left behind by historic floods that killed at least 25 people. you can see floodwaters slammed this school bus into a building, just devastated there, wrecked cars and downed trees are everywhere. tomorrow eastern kentucky is expecting several more rounds of rain that could make this flooding worse. electricity is out in many places. state officials say 21 drinking water systems have been damaged by rushing waters. there have been more than 600 water rescues. among the dead are four young kids from one family, the youngest just two years old. the governor of that state said it s vast destruction in that area he s worried they ll find victims for weeks to come. this is still an emergency situation, we are in search and rescue mode. again, that count is going to continue to go up. we don t lose this many people in flooding. this is a real tough one. cnn s evan joins me now. just incredible footage of the devastation where you re at right

excessive climate change. good afternoon, i m jim sciutto in for erin burnett, and outfront tonight, preparing for battle. cnn has learned that investigators want to force former trump officials to testify in court, and will use the court to do so. they want to know the actions of former president trump around january 6th, and this is the clearest sign yet that they are zeroing in on trump s actions as he tried to cling to power. this development is coming as the january 6th select committee is speaking to former acting chief of staff mick mulvaney, and former secretary state steve mnuchin, and a key witness, mnuchin had conversations with trump cabinet members hours after the cabinet, and he had a conversation about trying to remove trump by evoking the 25th amendment, and a number of people that he spoke to included secretary of state pompeo, and tonight, pompeo also appears closer to sitting down with the committee. we have had discussions with them about potential a
dispossession that intelligence officials needed to do a damage assessment. hard to believe a trump ally actually released this letter. we ll bring in a, cnn senior legal analyst. but carrie cordero. was a former counsel to the u.s. assisted ag for national security. good evening to both of, you so, early. we now know that trump had 700 pages of classified documents in his home. the information confirmed this letter released by his own team. that is a lot of information. how damaging is it looking for trump? there are two parts of it. there is what donald trump and his people had in mar-a-lago. 700 pages is a heck of a lot. the highest level classified. we re talking if you look at the permit, the top slice of that to stop secret. they are at the very tip-y top point of this with sci and the segmented client information. i m with s.a.t. which are special access programs. so the most classified classified, but with this letter shows us that donald trump s team knew, they wer
