France has lashed out at post-Brexit rules restricting their access to British waters, claiming that London is making changes arbitrarily without consulting Brussels.
French fishermen last night threatened to block British boats from landing in France if London continued to limit fishing off Jersey as the EU warned against discriminatory actions towards our fishermen.
The British government has authorised 41 trawlers with Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) technology - which allows ships to be located - to fish in waters off Jersey.
The French fisheries ministry asserts that London has effectively made new zoning rules for the waters - where the ships can go and cannot go , as well as the number of days the fishermen can spend at sea and with which machinery.
The French government said on Monday that it considers null and void new British requirements for fishing around the Channel Islands.
The UK published on Friday a list of 41 vessels equipped with Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) and authorised to fish in Jersey s waters since Saturday.
This list is accompanied by new requirements which have not been agreed, discussed or notified beforehand, the French Ministry of the Sea told AFP.
These consist mainly of new fishing zones, the number of days fishermen can spend in these waters and what gear they re allowed to fish with. We consider that if new requirements for sea areas or fishing gear are integrated into the licences, even though they have not been notified to the European Commission, they are null and void, the ministry added.

The post-Brexit dialogue on fishing seems at odds between France and the United Kingdom, after the arrangements set out by London on Friday regarding fishing areas and conditions in the Channel Islands.
“It is considered that if new requirements for sea zoning or fishing gear are included in the licenses, even though they have not been notified to the European Commission, they are null and void”, the Ministry of the Sea told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Monday (May 3rd).

The French government on Monday lashed out at new regulations which Britain has declared for fishing in its waters near the Channel Islands, deeming them null and void in a deepening post-Brexit row.
France and Britain have increasingly clashed over fishing in recent weeks, with French fishermen saying they are being prevented from operating in British waters because of difficulties in obtaining licences.
The French fisheries ministry said Britain had introduced new technical measures relating to licences for fishing off the Channel Islands which had not been properly declared to the European Union under the terms of the Brexit deal.
