Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Main Street staple Dick Putnam retires

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript The iconic Putnam’s storefront announces the news to Main Street: “Retirement Sale.” Dick Putnam has owned the Main Street staple since 1977 – but he, and the store, have been fixtures on the street much, much longer than that. “I like to say I’ve spent pretty much 73 of my 75 years on the premises,” Putnam joked. “My parents used to curl me up between the pants for my nap.” Putnam’s, an apparel, dry cleaning and tailoring shop, has been on Main Street since 1934. The store started its life in another location as W.H. Emerson’s, but was bought by Putnam’s great uncle, Charles Putnam, who had been involved with the business for years at that point.
